Census

The Census dashboard reports are available to all Cal Answers users and contain data about the official student census. The census is taken on the 5th Saturday following the start of instruction each Fall and Spring semester, counting all degree-seeking students who are enrolled in at least one class on that date.

Report Questions That Can Be Answered
Census Counts
  • What is the count of registered students at the campus level or within a specific unit (e.g., College, Division, Department, Major), for a given semester?
Census by Multiple Fields
  • What are the characteristics of these students (e.g., ethnicity, gender, residency, entry status as a freshman or transfer, status as an undergraduate or graduate student)?
Census Equity Comparison
  • How does a given unit (e.g., Department) compare to the campus as a whole with respect to their percentage of female or underrepresented minority students?
Detailed Ethnicity
  • How many domestic students reported a particular detailed race/ethnicity (e.g., Hmong, Laotian)? What are these counts for a specific major, entry status (e.g., freshman, transfer), undergraduate/graduate status, and semester?
Academic Plan Counts
  • How many students were within a Graduate Self-Supporting Program or Law Self-Supporting Program as of the Fall 2020 End of Term? What specific majors and academic plans were these students pursuing a degree within?
Summer by Multiple Fields
  • How many non-UC students registered for the summer term over the last 3 years? For students who were affiliated with other UC campuses, how many came from a particular campus?

Degrees Earned

The Degrees Earned dashboard reports are available to all Cal Answers users, and contain data about the degrees, certificates, and notifications of candidacy that the university awards to students upon completion of their program requirements.

Report Questions That Can Be Answered
Degree Counts
  • How many students were awarded degrees within a given timeframe (e.g., academic year), for a given degree level (e.g., Bachelor, Doctoral), and within a specific unit (e.g., Campus, College, Department, Major)?
  • How many degrees were awarded to students within a given timeframe, by degree level, and within a specific unit?
Degrees by Multiple Fields
  • What are the characteristics of degree recipients (e.g., gender, ethnicity)?
  • What are the trends in the # of degree recipients or the # of degrees awarded over a given timeframe? For a given population? Within a campus unit?
Degree Equity Comparison
  • How does a given unit compare to the campus with respect to their percentage of female or underrepresented minority degree recipients?

  • What percentage of undergraduates who entered UC Berkeley in a particular semester (e.g., Fall 2007) graduated within a specific timeframe (e.g., 4 years)?
UG Graduation Rates by Multiple Fields
  • What are the graduation rates of students across various demographic characteristics, and over time?
UG Time to Degree
  • How long did it take degree recipients to graduate?
  • What was their mean and median time-to-degree?
  • How many years or semesters did it take for them to graduate?
  • What was the elapsed calendar time-to-degree?
  • How does undergraduate time-to-degree vary across academic units (e.g., college, department) and by student demographics (e.g., gender, ethnicity)?

Multiple Majors

The Multiple Majors dashboard reports are available to all Cal Answers users and contain data on undergraduate registered students with more than one major (e.g., double majors, triple majors).

Campus Summary
  • What percentage of undergraduate students campus-wide and in a given major are single, double or triple majors.
  • Has that changed over time?
  • How does it compare to other majors?
Multiple Majors Detail
  • Which programs have the highest number and percentage of multiple majors?
Visualization
  • For multiple majors in my program, what are their other majors?
  • What are the most common major combinations?
Multiple Plans Detail
  • How many undergraduates have a single academic plan, and how many have multiple plans? '
